Movie Theory: Sound

Sound is what gives the characters a story to tell to the audience. althought at the beginning of film they did it with movements and letters on the screen, the success of a film depends on the dialogues, sounds and music that it has. If for example, there were to be an explosion of a building and the sound of that explosion is not believable, then the whole idea of the scene will be eliminated. Or, if you hear the voice of a character and the movement of the lips do not match, then you feel that the whole point of the movie pretending to be real is destroyed. For many other reasons, sound is a very important and yet more difficult to control tool that is in the arsenal of the filmmakers.
Many programs have been created in order to improve or create new sounds that match with the pictures, althought what rules yet is the imagination of the creators of different sounds in order to create new and special ones.

Movie Review: Salt

Salt is a movie in which Angelina Jolie is known as Agent Salt, a woman that works for the CIA. During an interivew they discovered that she was a Russian Agent with the command to kill the president of that country. After long pursuits, great chasing effects and explosions that characterize an action film, Salt ends up running away from the cops and with the wish to take revenge on the people who killed her husband.
This movie had a lot of Special Effects as explosions, bullets holes, breaking windows and the list goes on.
A master job on the fighting scenes and a quick yet important dialogue makes this movie a must see if you look for action and great CGI effects.

Film Theory: Music Videos

Music videos are videotaped performances of a recorded popular song, usually complemented by dance or a fragmentary story and sometimes employing concert footage.

The music video form was popularized by the MTV cable network and began to have wide popularity and influence in the early 1980s.

Most of the music videos last to three or five minutes, depending of the song and the story that the director wants to tell to the audience.

Music videos frequently include quick cuts, stylizations, fanciful and often erotic imagery, and computer graphics.

Movie Reivew: Letters to Juliet

Letters to Juliet is a 2010 movie directed by Gary Winick and it has Amanda Seyfried in the starring role, along the company of Gael Garcia Bernal, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero and Christopher Egan, being the setting of the movie in Verona, Italy.

The scenography of the film was spectacular with amazing locations and beautiful shots. There was balance between what was in the back and the actors and the places actually were the perfect ones for the magical and yet modern turn of the movie.

The actors also did a reat job in portraying the characters and you could see the care and professionalism that they had. A cute thing was that the couple of Redgrave and Nero are actually together in the real life and you could see the love emanating from them. Gael Garcia Bernal did a good job in showing the crazy and yet good lookin fiancé of Seyfried and Egan did a amazing job in portraying the rich, smart and yet adorable british boy that falls in love.

I definitley recomend this movie for all the people that believe that falling in love can happen at any moment and any time.

Film Theory: Rule of Thirds

Basically the rule of thirds is the imaginary division of the shot in lines set horizontally and vertically. This is created so when we locate an object, if it is located in the main centers of the crosses between the two lines, then we get it in a good position.

This rule can be used in photography and filmmaking, because both help the director or photographer to locate in the best possible way the object to get the viewer focus on it better.

In the previous picture we can see that the bee's eye is on a reference point of the rule of thirds, hence the photographer wanted the viewer to focus on the eye. This is made so that the viewer can see what the photographer wants him to see first.

Movie Review: Karate Kid 2010

I will talk about the movie Karate Kid, in which actors Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (son of Will Smith) took the role of master and apprentice.

Jaden Smith is a young boy from New York who, because of a promotion her mother has, moves to Beijing, China. He doesn't speak chinese nor has any friends there. One day he meets a chinese girl that speaks English and they become friends. The problem is that there is a boy that likes the same girl, but because of the customs of China and the domination of the male over the female, he assumes control of her life and friends. This kid is a Kung-fu fighter and in a quick movement kicks Jaden. He then gets the help from Jackie Chan who is a Kung-Fu master and they enter in the national tournament of Kung- Fu. In the way they learn things about each other and become friends.

One of the great things about the movie was the location, and a great scenography, with the basic idea that less is more and great natural locations found in China (The great Wall, the Forbidden City, etc)

Another thing was the coreography of the fights and knowing of the art of Kung- Fu, (if you have a master of entertaining Kung-Fu like Jackie Chan)

Although the story of the main character with the girl is silly and takes a wrong turn, overall, the movie was very good, but still, nothing compared to the one from the 80's. Jackie Chandid a good job in personalizing the Kung-Fu master and Jaden Smith wasn't so bad.
